Severe weather threat brings down Durham's giant moon on Halloween

Durham, N.C. — A giant moon hanging above the CCB Plaza in Durham is already wowing crowds. But visitors won’t be able to see it on Halloween, organizers say.
Strong winds anticipated Thursday forced organizers to take down the Bull Moon Rising exhibit. The hanging moon, which has a diameter of nearly 23 feet, was created by Luke Jerram, an artist from the United Kingdom.
The Triangle is under a level 3 risk for severe weather Halloween night, with strong winds and rain expected to move in by 8 p.m.
Events planned for Thursday night, including a reading of “Goodnight Moon” and a Halloween show from Paperhand Puppet Intervention, have also been canceled.
The moon will be hung again on Friday and should stay suspended until Sunday, Nov. 3. Events planned for the rest of the weekend include a Bull Moon Ball on Friday at Unscripted Hotel, a community dinner and reggae performance on Saturday, and yoga on Sunday.
The installation honors the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which occurred on July 24, 1969.
You can find the moon at the CCB Plaza on Corcoran Street in downtown Durham.
